Potter County, South Dakota
Sheriff's Department

Updated November, 2007

This is my personal (unofficial) web site.
There is an  official site  for the Potter County Sheriff.

Potter County, population 3800, is located in central South Dakota, 50 miles northeast of the state capitol of Pierre. The western edge borders the Missouri River's Lake Oahe reservoir.   The Potter County Sheriff's Department is currently manned by myself (elected Sheriff  in November 2006), one part-time deputy, and an executive secretary.  Our 911 dispatch is regionalized at Mobridge to the north.  We no longer operate a jail facility, and our inmates are contracted to neighboring counties.

The county seat city of Gettysburg ("where the battle wasn't"), pop. 1500, has one full-time city officer and a part-time Police Chief.

Gettysburg was founded by a group of Civil War veterans who named it for the famous battle site in PA.  Gettysburg is also home to Game Fish & Parks officer Brad Saltsman. I have been with this department since November 1997.  Major projects for the department include rural 911 addressing, of which I was coordinator.  It is now fully implemented.

"Back in the Day" I have worked :

Include Walworth County, pop. 6500, along the Missouri River in north central SD, as a jailer and part-time Deputy Sheriff for two years prior to coming to Potter County in 1997;

The City of Whitewood, in the northern Black Hills area, pop. 1100, as Police Chief for three years;

Corson County, pop. 4100, in northwestern South Dakota as Deputy Sheriff four years and as Sheriff four more years;

and the City of McIntosh, pop. 400, in Corson County as Police Chief for 5 years (my first law-enforcement position).

I've worked mostly rural departments and small towns, where you have to be proficient in all areas of investigation...from the homicide, suicide, burglary, drug, fatal traffic accident, and other major crimes...right down to parking complaints.

In a sparsely populated state like South Dakota, any "backup" officers can be a long way off, so you have to rely on your training and, at times, the helpful citizen for assistance.

You also may have to wear several "hats"... I have also been a volunteer firefighter and ambulance attendant for many years.

I have a special interest in traffic collision investigation, and have a variety of hobbies, among them are my old cars.
